Infant Torticollis Therapy
How Our Physical Therapists Help with Infant Torticollis
Infant torticollis is a condition that can affect a baby’s neck mobility, often leading to the baby favoring one side when turning their head. At East Coast Audiology and Physical Therapy, our pediatric physical therapists specialize in treating this condition through gentle, effective techniques designed to restore balance and improve neck movement.
The Impact of Torticollis on Head Shape
One of the most common complications of untreated torticollis is plagiocephaly, or flat head syndrome. When a baby consistently rests on one side due to neck tightness, this pressure can cause an uneven or flattened head shape. While many cases of plagiocephaly can be corrected with repositioning and physical therapy, more severe cases may require additional intervention.
Does My Baby Need a Helmet?
In certain cases, physical therapy alone may not be enough to reshape the baby’s head. If the head shape remains significantly asymmetrical, a cranial helmet may be recommended. Helmets are designed to gently guide the baby’s head into a more symmetrical shape as they grow. Our team will work closely with you and other healthcare providers to determine if this step is necessary and ensure the best outcome for your baby.
Our Approach to Treating Infant Torticollis
At East Coast Audiology and Physical Therapy, our pediatric specialists create a tailored treatment plan for each baby. This typically includes:
-
Gentle stretching exercises to lengthen tight neck muscles
-
Strengthening exercises to improve muscle balance
-
Parent education on at-home exercises and optimal positioning techniques
-
Collaboration with specialists for helmet therapy if needed
Why Early Intervention Matters
The earlier torticollis is addressed, the more effective treatment can be. Early physical therapy helps prevent complications like head shape abnormalities and promotes proper muscle development. Our goal is to provide comprehensive, supportive care for both you and your baby throughout the process.
