Hearing Aid Maintenance Tips

Ensuring your hearing aids are well-maintained is crucial for optimal performance and longevity. At East Coast Audiology and Physical Therapy, we’re dedicated to helping you make the most of your hearing aids. Follow these tips to keep your devices in top condition:

1. Daily Cleaning
Wipe Down: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down your hearing aids every day. Avoid using water, cleaning fluids, or alcohol, as these can damage the electronics.
Brush Away Debris: Most hearing aids come with a small brush. Use it to gently remove any wax or debris from the microphone and receiver openings.

2. Proper Storage
Dry Environment: Store your hearing aids in a dry, cool place. Avoid leaving them in the bathroom or other humid areas.
Use a Case: Always keep your hearing aids in their case when not in use to protect them from dust and accidental damage.

3. Regular Battery Care
Check and Replace Batteries: Regularly check the battery levels and replace them as needed. On average, batteries last about a week.
Leave the Compartment Open: When not in use, leave the battery compartment open to allow moisture to escape and prolong battery life.

4. Earwax Management
Professional Cleanings: Regular check-ups with our audiologists can help manage earwax buildup. Avoid inserting objects into your ears, as this can push wax further in.
Wax Guards: Many hearing aids come with wax guards to prevent earwax from entering the device. Replace these guards as instructed by your audiologist.

5. Moisture Protection
Dehumidifiers: Consider using a hearing aid dehumidifier overnight. This can help remove any moisture that has accumulated throughout the day.
Avoid Water: Remove your hearing aids before showering, swimming, or any activity involving water.

6. Regular Check-Ups
Routine Appointments: Schedule regular appointments with our audiologists to ensure your hearing aids are functioning correctly. We can clean, check, and adjust them as necessary. Performance Checks: If you notice any changes in performance, such as decreased sound quality or feedback, schedule a visit with us promptly.

7. Handle with Care
Gentle Handling: Always handle your hearing aids with care, especially when inserting or removing them. Avoid Dropping: A fall can damage the delicate components inside your hearing aids. Consider sitting down and working over a soft surface when handling them.
